In its continuing series of Guest Lectures and Thought Leadership programmes, PetroFed organised a lecture on ‘The Indian Economy - Prospects & Constraints’ by Dr.RajivKumar, Director & Chief Executive, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) on December 1, 2006 at New Delhi.
Chairing the session Sh. B.K. Bakhshi, former Chairman, IndianOil, expressed optimism on India’s growth prospects and its emergence among the five largest economies of the world.
Dr. Rajiv Kumar strengthened that optimism by citing key figures and added that demographics was in India’s favour. At the same time he drew attention to the inequality in per capita income which was as wide as Rs.6000/- per annum in Bihar to Rs.52,000/- per annum in Delhi. He was quick to add that this was, however, better than that of China and several Latin American countries.
Dr. Rajiv Kumar, called for bringing down tariff peaks, rationalising income tax structure and, better access in power sector. Dr. Rajiv Kumar, who is a Ph.D from Lucknow University and D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University has been Professor at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance, worked on several country desks at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at Manila for a decade, Chief Economist with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and is a member of National Security Advisory Board.
His incisive presentation was greatly appreciated by the senior oil and gas executives present as was evident from the extended open session when Dr. Kumar answered a wide range of questions.
