Integrated Refining Operations

The challenges of integrated refining operations to augment GRMs in times of increasing demand for cleaner products and processing of heavier and sour crudes was brought out by Mr. S. C. Mehta, Executive Director (Mumbai Refinery), HPCL during his inaugural address at the workshop on ‘Pursuit of World Class Integrated Refining Operations’ organised by PetroFed in knowledge partnership with member company SAP India Private Limited on July 4, 2011 at New Delhi in association with Mr. Hal Zesch, former Senior Vice President and CIO of Valero Energy, USA.
Welcoming participants earlier Mr. A. K. Arora, Director General, PetroFed pointed out that India has the potential and opportunity to become a hub for refining and petrochemicals and that there is a strong case for development of a coastal area like Paradip as a Super Site for refining, petrochemicals and chemicals.

The role of technology and information systems in integrated refining operations across the entire value chain were brought out in his theme address by Mr. Anoop Srivastava, Industry Director (Oil & Gas and Chemicals), SAP India Private Limited.

A detailed presentation on online monitoring to optimize business strategy, model, process and systems of people and processes was made by Mr. Hal Zesch, former Senior Vice President and CIO of Valero Energy, USA who led the transformation and integration of 17 refineries in a span of one year to grow from a dollar five billion company to a dollar 120 billion multinational.

The key issues were thereafter commented upon and deliberated by a panel of experts from the industry, chaired by the former Chairman & Managing Director, Engineers India Limited and Director (Refineries), BPCL, Mr. Mukesh Rohatgi.  The eminent panelists included Mr. A. C. Mishra, General Manager (Optimization), IndianOil; Mr. U. K. Roy, General Manager (PS-PDRP), IndianOil; Mr. S. Ramasamy, Executive Director (IS), IndianOil; Mr. Dhananjay Ghosh, General Manager (Operations), Numaligarh Refinery Limited besides Mr. Hal Zesch, former Senior Vice President and CIO of Valero Energy, USA and Mr. S. C. Mehta, Executive Director (Mumbai Refinery), HPCL.
After his brief closing remarks a vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Alok Goyal, Chief Operating Officer, SAP India Private Limited.
