Project Management

More than 100 major projects ranging from Rs. 120 to Rs. 3000 crore are at various stages of implementation in the oil & gas sector.  Despite a comparatively better track record than other sectors there are still time and cost over-runs which can be minimised, if not avoided, through better project management.

To bring home some of these critical issues the first national conference on Project Management in Oil & Gas 2009 was organized by the Project Management Institute in association with PetroFed on December 8, 2009 at New Delhi.  The theme of the day-long conference was ‘Optimising Organisational Performance: Harnessing the Value of Project Management’.

Active interest was aroused by Mr. Raj Kalady, Managing Director,India, PMI in his welcome address and further elaborated upon by Mr. Steve Fahrenkrog, Vice President (Regional Development), PMI, USA in his theme address.

In a brilliant extempore inaugural address Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva, Director (Offshore), ONGC brought out the far reaching dimensions of project management in the highly capital intensive oil & gas sector.  Mr. A. K. Arora, Director General, PetroFed brought out while proposing a vote of thanks that an estimated 26 trillion US Dollars at 2008 dollar parity will be required to meet the 2030 projected global energy demand.

The one-day programme had four business sessions focusing on planning & execution of projects, contract management, risk management and developing a project organisation.  A panel discussion featured experts who presented their view point and answered a host of questions.  Over a dozen speakers made presentations to more than four score participants.
