" Innovation and Future Energy Challenges "

In its series of Guest Lectures and thought leadership programmes PetroFed organised, in association with Lovraj Kumar Memorial Trust, a lecture on ‘Innovation and Future Energy Challenges' by Dr. Stanley A. Gembicki, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President R&D, UOP LLC, Illinois, USA on February 10, 2006 at PetroFed, New Delhi.

Chairing the session and welcoming Dr. Gembicki, CMD, EIL, Sh. Mukesh Rohatgi lauded the role of UOP in technology innovation for which Dr. Gembicki had received the National Technology Award from the President of the United States of America for the year 2003 in March last year. This is the highest US National Award for technology innovation.

Dr. Gembicki in his address dwelt on the challenges, enablers and tools for technology innovation and its role in meeting the continuing challenges in the chemical and hydrocarbon industry. He further elaborated on the innovations required and the possibility of a methanol based alternative route for a sustained energy economy.

Considering the abundance of coal in the world in comparison to oil, gas and tar sands, he suggested a likely methanol economy based on coal gassification. He elaborated by giving macro-economics for the same. Innovation, Dr. Gembicki stressed can be accelerated with new tools and greater ‘partnering' between industry and technology providers because of the risks involved in commercialising new technologies.

The large number of questions raised by senior industry leaders, CEOs and academicians from over 20 organizations demonstrated the high level of interest aroused.

Sh. Mukesh Rohatgi summed up the proceedings and a vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. I.B. Gulati, Trustee, Lovraj Kumar Memorial Trust.

Earlier, the session Chairman, speaker and participants were welcomed by Director General, PetroFed, Sh. A.K. Arora. At the end, he requested Dr. J.P. Kapur, Trustee, LKMT to present a memento to speaker Dr. Gembicki on behalf of PetroFed and LKMT.
