The importance of Enhanced Oil Recovery in times when new discoveries are hard to come by was highlighted in a brilliant extempore inaugural address by CMD, ONGC, Mr. R. S. Sharma at the conference on ‘IOR-EOR: Challenges, Process & Technologies’ organised by PetroFed in association with the World Petroleum Council under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas at New Delhi on April 15-16, 2010. Mr. Sharma said, ONGC had already invested about Rs 25000 crore during the past seven to eight years in IOR-EOR.
Mr. D. K. Pande, Vice President (Youth & Gender), World Petroleum Council and Director (Exploration), ONGC in his theme address dwelt in detail on the subject and its diverse ramifications.
Welcoming participants earlier, Chairman, PetroFed and Advisor, Petronet LNG Limited, Mr. Sarthak Behuria gave a comprehensive overview of the global oil & gas situation highlighting the need for tertiary recovery.
The Director General, World Petroleum Council, Dr. Pierce Riemer, while expressing his regrets for not being able to come because of visa delay, lauded the relevance of the topic and conveyed through his message that from a WPC ‘issues’ perspective the conference addresses new technology, efficiency, worries about peak oil, climate change and the need to train people.
The 1½ day conference in five sessions witnessed 16 presentations addressing the national & international experiences, processes, emerging technologies, and productivity enhancement & control.
Addressing the valedictory session, Mr. D. N. Narasimha Raju, Joint Secretary (Exploration), Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, which is the National Council Member of WPC, complimented the organisation of the conference on a key technical issue of the E&P sector for the first time in the country. He hoped this would generate greater interest & investment in the sector.
The valedictory session also witnessed the launching of the website of the 3rd World Petroleum Council Youth Forum by Shri D. K. Pande, Vice President (Youth & Gender), World Petroleum Council and Director (Exploration), ONGC. The Youth Forum will be held for the first time in India during Petrotech International Conference & Exhibition in November, 2010.
