Competition Law in the Service of Society |
Mr. R. Prasad, Member of the Competition Commission of India during his talk while providing an insight into the background and evolution of Competition Law across the globe, covered in depth the developments which led to the enactment of Competition Law in India and setting up of Competition Commission of India. The objectives and essential components of the Competition Act were explained by him quoting from specific cases to highlight their importance with particular reference to formation of cartels, public procurement, e-procurement, abuse of dominance and need to provide a level playing field to ensure that benefits of the Competition Law are rightfully passed on to the actual consumer and society at large.

The Guest Lecture was organized by PetroFed under its series of Guest Lectures and Thought Leadership Programmes on July 22, 2011, New Delhi. The lecture and interactive session that followed generated intense involvement from the participants in seeking clarification on some of the important aspects of the Competition Law with particular reference to the mergers and acquisition.
A Mechanical Engineer from IIT, Kharagpur and Post Graduate in Finance from the University of Strathclude, Glasgow, Mr. Prasad joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1970 and superannuated in 2008 at the helm of affairs as Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes
