ETT Discusses Natural Gas/LNG |
The Energy Think Tank, chaired by Mr. T. N. R. Rao, former Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, at its meeting on May 26, 2010 hosted by PetroFed witnessed a presentation on the ‘Natural Gas and LNG Scenario in India’ by Mr. Prosad Dasgupta, CEO & MD, Petronet LNG Limited at New Delhi.
During his presentation, Mr. Dasgupta projected the share of natural gas to go up from 9% to 20% in the Indian energy basket by 2025. According to his analysis, by 2015 the demand would outstrip supply by 108 mmscmd. He called for growth in pipeline infrastructure and establishment of a Pooled Price Mechanism to be discovered on daily basis like prices of crude oil.
ETT members debated the advisability of a Pooled Price Mechanism without establishment of the contours and parameters for price discovery. Members observed that any price based on a cost plus formula or arbitrary fixation by a committee could not be considered as a market discovery price. This was particularly true at a time when gas price is getting de-linked from crude oil or liquid fuel price. The matter, it was agreed, needed more detailed study and deliberations.
The meeting ended with closing remarks by ETT Convener, Mr. J. S. Oberoi.
