In its series of Guest Lectures and thought leadership programmes, PetroFed organised, in association with Lovraj Kumar Memorial Trust, a lecture on 'Catalysis and petroleum refining' by Mr. H. J. Lovink, Former Senior Scientist and Catalyst Group Manager at Akzo Nobel Catalyst Research Centre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on Friday, October 28, 2005. .
Session Chairman, Sh. Jaspal Singh, Director (Refineries) IndianOil introduced the speaker and highlighted the role of catalysis in refining.
Mr. Lovink in his brilliant exposition brought out the significant role of catalysis in ‘conversion of bottoms' and their use in refining and improving automotive fuels with relation to the environmental aspects. He gave new insight into the development of catalysts and their evolvement over the years. Catalysis, he emphasized was an old science but is continually developing and adapting to the new challenges of upgrading bottoms and producing environment friendly fuels.
Mr. Lovink has been consulting for nearly a decade and in the decade prior to that was Senior Technical Associate for Akzo Nobel serving as Technical / Scientific Advisor for the large worldwide catalyst group. He graduated from Delft Technical University in 1954 with the highest degree in Chemical Engineering and after joining Katjen Company (what is now as Akzo Nobel) rose through the ranks to become their Scientific Advisor.
His exposition generated tremendous interest among a full house of 50 participants which included not only members of the industry but academicians, students and consultants, besides members of the Energy Think Tank.
The participants were earlier welcomed by Sh. Y. Sahai, Director (Comm. & Mktg.) PetroFed. A vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. I.B. Gulati, Trustee, LKMT.
