International Forum in association with World Petroleum Council and UN Global Compact

   PetroFed organised a peer-to-peer international forum in association with World Petroleum Council and UN Global Compact at New Delhi during December 6-7, 2007 on Responsible Business Practices in the Oil & Gas Sector – Implementing the UN Global Compact Principles.  The 1½ day forum was inaugurated by Mr. L Mansingh, the first chairperson of the Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board of India and attended by nearly 120 senior executives including about a dozen from abroad.

This was the second such initiative in the world.  The first being at Kuala Lumpur in March, 2007.  Welcoming participants, Mr. A K Arora, Director General, PetroFed drew attention to the ongoing Bali Conference and climate change issues and exhorted industry members to voluntarily implement the 10 Global Compact Principles clubbed under Human Rights, Labour Standards, Environment and Anti-Corruption.

Further details on WPC and UNGC were provided by Dr. Pierce Riemer, Director General, World Petroleum Council and Mr. Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact.  Shri Mansingh in his inaugural address touched upon the manner in which the UNGC principles were covered under India’s PNGRB Act.

There were four business sessions on the first day on Environment, Human Rights and Labour Issues, Community Development and Anti Corruption.  These were chaired respectively by Mr. A K Jain, Joint Secretary, MoP&NG with Mr. Georg Kell, as Co-chair; Dr. A K Balyan, Director(HR), ONGC with Mr. Vizia Saradhi, Director (HR), HPCL as Co-Chair; Mr. V C Agrawal, Director (HR), IOCL and Mr. Prabh Das, Joint Secretary (R), MoP&NG with Mr. A. D. Mehrotra, Chief Vigilance Officer (EIL) as Co-chair.  There were fourteen presentations, of which three were from abroad namely, Nigeria, StatOil Hydro, Norway and Petrobras, Brazil.

On the second day, the first session on Consumer Perspective was chaired by Dr. S K Sarkar, Joint Secretary, Department of Personnel & Training, Govt. of India and the panel discussion by Mr. S A Narayan, Director (HR), BPCL.

The Welcome Reception & Dinner on December 5, 2007 was hosted by the Director, HR, IOCL while the Conference Dinner on 6th December was hosted by Director (HR), ONGC.

A vote of thanks was proposed at the end of the forum by Shri S L Das, Director (BD&C), PetroFed.
